15th of January 2016 – Oak Group International today announced Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust has licensed the Oak Group’s Making Care Appropriate for Patients (MCAP) Clinical Utilisation Review (CUR) tool for deployment across all their beds. Portsmouth are one of the first NHS Trusts to license a CUR tool using the NHS England CUR framework. Portsmouth has one of the UK’s busiest emergency departments with over 132,000 patients treated each year as well as holding the prestigious Cancer Beacon Status for the Head and Neck Cancer Services.

Portsmouth’s decision came after a detailed evaluation of all four suppliers on the NHSE CUR Framework. Deciding to go with the Oak Group having conducted audits with the MCAP tool in the past and having a full understanding of the data it harvests. The MCAP tool identifies opportunities for whole system patient flow improvements and integration, provides decision makers with the necessary evidence and advanced patient flow analytics in real-time to support improvements in admission reduction, MDT discharge and system integration. In 2015 NHS England introduced a substantial Commissioning for Quality and Innovation scheme (CQUIN) to support providers in adopting clinical utilisation review technology for specialised admitted patient care and critical care in 2015/16.

The goal of the Clinical utilisation review  CQUIN is to improve patient flow, enhance quality and ensure patients are treated in the most appropriate clinical settings, freeing up staff time and hospital resources. The Oak Group are the first supplier to be chosen off the NHS England CUR framework.

“We welcome Portsmouth to our growing client community and really look forward to supporting them in their deployment of CUR to reduce inappropriate admissions and length of stay. This is an exciting time for the Oak Group and CUR development in the UK” said Alistair Frost, CEO, The Oak Group.

Maria Purse, Quality Improvement Programme Manager for emergency care at Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are delighted to be working with OAK Group International. We feel that the implementation of this will allow us to improve patient care and reduce the time patients need to spend in hospital. It will be an asset to our clinical teams.

“We are working to implement this with our health and social care partners and hope to commence the rollout during the spring.”
